Arpita

A professional artist and teacher based in Mumbai, I have turned my childhood captivation and passion for painting into a boutique business.

The seed for Arpita Art and Design Studio was initially sown as a ‘passion project’, which eventually matured into a niche profession, steering my burning passion for art onto a career path. I am inspired by the beauty around me and choose to channel this fascination into my work, where I weave little stories into my art. As I’m a strong believer in the idea that beauty lies in simplicity, I notice beauty in everyday things: within the interesting bending of light and shadow, hidden inside the unique texture of a painted door along a gravel road in a quaint countryside.

My story is a bit offbeat, a bit unpredictable, and just awesome enough to surprise me at every turn, much like my artwork. My affection for art and design carried me well through my juvenile years, through the period when I was at liberty to explore the world around me with young, gleaming eyes. However, as life often does, it took me down an unexpected path when academics began gaining importance as I got older and, while the creative inside me hibernated to make space for math equations and scientific formulas, my inherent desire to pursue art as a profession was never quenched.

As I grew, so did my passion for art. Honouring my connection to nature, I opted for taking up botany and physiology as my minor subjects, majoring in zoology for college. Later, when I went on to get a Masters degree in the subject, I finally found a creative outlet for the artistic urges slowly building up inside me. My then-hidden creative flowed onto the paper in the detailed diagrams of animals and plants during class - while everyone traced their drawings from their textbooks, I would spend hours patiently etching each intricacy of my subject onto the paper. Over the duration of the 3 years of the course, I think I must’ve sketched around 300 detailed figures of varied animals and their structures (or perhaps even more!). As I advanced to achieve a Bachelors of Education degree , one thing was constant in my mind: the tiny voice whispering in my ear that this was not the best career path for me. While I loved teaching children and felt a spark of joy whenever I saw that glitter of knowledge and curiosity in their eyes, teaching a subject that I didn’t feel connected with fatigued me eventually, leading to me quitting my job as a middle-school teacher a few years later.

Again, life meandered on and swept me away with it, carrying me over vast oceans and helping me travel to faraway lands. Before I knew it, it had been almost 30 years since I had last fully invested myself in an art project. This distance took its toll on me and, realising that nothing was stopping me anymore, I slowly started getting in touch with my creativity again. I returned to the comforting arms of my passion. It took me a while, but I slowly regained the burning love for art that I’d pushed away for so long. I learned, I relearned, and I explored things I hadn’t had the courage to explore before. Now, while my journey still has a long way to go, I’m proud that I had the opportunity to return to art and design after almost three decades, and am channelling this love for the subject through pursuing my dream for Arpita Art & Design Studio.

As an artist, I’m open to working with all mediums, including acrylic, oil and watercolour paint, and have a wide variety of products and services (ranging from fine watercolour to custom made portraits to personalised cards and invites). I love collaborating with clients and I enthusiastically welcome new partnerships, where I assert your vision with a twist of my own imagination into reality. I have more than 10 years of experience and training in teaching specifically, and I appreciate the importance of having a different approach to understanding the needs and goals of each of my students. I am also eternally grateful that I’ve had the opportunity to learn from many masters who’ve guided me through the process.
