Jendayi “Jedi Maji” Berry (1984 - ), is an American multi-disciplinary artist born and raised on the Southside of Minneapolis. Regarded locally as an extraordinarily gifted “artist you should know” by Minneapolis.org and “the face of fluid painting” by MSP magazine, this artrepreneur is the visual James Baldwin of the Southside. His work sits at the cross-sections of abstract art, storytelling, activism and innovation.
In his early years Jendayi demonstrated extraordinary artistic talent, drawing & illustrating in a whimsically naturalistic manner through his childhood and adolescence. As an only child raised by a single mother, Jendayi was filled with the kind of love and encouragement that would later become his message to the world. Inspired by all things art, from the architectural landscape of the twin cities to artists like Ernie Barnes who was presented as a staple in his fathers home, Jedi’s work reflects both the subjective and the objective, the abstracted beauty of life and the metaphorical suggestion of unity.
But like most artists, Jendayi fell privy to the practicality of art as a career and never pursued it wholeheartedly. It wasn’t until his 30’s, after dropping out of college and having a family, that “the call” really began to pull at his soul. He transitioned from a hobbyist to full-time emerging artist during the great awakening of 2020. He currently lives just outside of the city with his wife and 3 daughters.
