In the story, the Little Prince meets a lamplighter on a tiny planet. The lamplighter has to light and extinguish his street lamp every day, which is especially tiring because his planet has 1,440 sunsets a day!

Despite the exhaustion, the Little Prince sees purpose in this seemingly absurd task, since each time the lamplighter lights a lamp is “as if he brought a new star to life”.
