Art Astro

Independent research astronomer, computer programmer, and science data artist. Based in dark and quiet south-eastern Arizona, USA.

Do you think that most scientific data is just boring charts and graphs?

Would you ever hang science data on the wall, or wear it on your back? Only if it looks epic, right?

As a scientist, I know that science data is beautiful. From a certain perspective, there is beauty in all forms of scientific data. I have found a way to share that knowledge and perspective with others by taking science data and turning it into visual and audio art. While my primary data source is astronomy (I'm an independent research astronomer) I don't limit myself to a single source. Data is everywhere, and this source of creativity is infinite.

The artwork I create is directed by the data. My participation is manipulating the tools that create the art. I can’t draw or paint for sh*t, so the tools in this case aren't pens, or paper, or brushes. I use a number of algorithms, computer programs, and scripts that take in the raw science data and generate the final unique rendering.

These renderings, in my opinion, stand on their own in terms of beauty. However, understanding what data is being presented adds extra depth and appreciation. They are an excellent educational tool and conversation piece.
