Belén Berdeja is a self-taught Mexican artist. Her work focuses on women and their constant struggle in a society where so much is expected of and imposed on them. By means of her painting technique she intends to express a fragmentation between two opposite forces present in women. One part being their nature, essence, intrinsic value and beauty – all those things that are unchangeable and do not depend on anything. The other part being that which has been slowly and sometimes harshly imposed on them, watered by family values, cultural traditions, beauty canons, media, and anything having to do with society’s expectations on being womanly.
