Jasmine is a visual artist and poet from Pittsburgh, PA.
Her artwork centers on giving full perspective to the black experience, both the experiences to protest and those to celebrate. Her artwork is influenced by her childhood, in which the pervasive, negative stereotypes of black people in Pittsburgh, coupled with black invisibility in the ever-gentrifying city limits, left her to discover for herself what blackness truly was, and what it could be.
A large part of Jasmine's influences come from intersectional activists and artists who use artwork and prose to express and/or educate others about their identities in innovative ways. Her work pays special attention to black women and fights against the notion that they must be referred to in comparison to whiteness as opposed to whole beings onto themselves, hence the tagline “You are more than a comparison. You are enough.”. In every painting and poem, Jasmine works to teach about and reaffirm the voice of her community.
Jasmine is part of the artist collective 1Hood Media, based in Pittsburgh, PA. 1Hood Media is a collective of socially conscious artists and activists, who believe that art is the best way to challenge inequity, raise awareness, and unify humanity.
