The work of Chuck celebrates people by exploring the connection between our bodies, desires and personal identity. Inspired by fashion, photography and popular culture Chuck references personal issues, sexuality and gender as a central theme in her work. Press considers how style reflects how we engage with the world around us. Clothes are a personal decision and what we choose to wear is the way we express ourselves and connect with the world around us. “Often times it’s a gesture or pose I am interested in, it’s there that I see the history of figure or portrait painting”. Born and raised in Nairobi, Chuck is a graduate of Maseno University. Being a fashion illustration major at Moore prepared her for decades of success in the fashion design world. He has worked with various artists in Kenya by merging his graffiti, mural and graphic design knowledge. Photography has been integral in achieving most of his inspiration and creative spark. His male and female characters are inspired by where grew up, Kibera, one of the largest slums in Kenya. The subjects seek to capture their fashion, confidence, creativity and charm despite surrounded by limited resources, negativity and several social prejudices. Chuck provokes and challenges the audience to an in-depth analysis and critical thinking into how everyday objects can turn magical, surreal and beautiful. His style is heavily influenced by contemporary fashion in Africa and partly western influence and figurative paintings from the renaissances. His signature paints are vibrant bold and unforgiving, her goes forth integrating animals in the most unique and creative ways thus introducing a variety of conversations between him and the viewer. His process is evolving as he photographs his own subjects and merges them with parts of found images. Chuck’s work Charles is an internationally exhibiting artist and he has been featured in exhibitions like; The Bobby Pal Foundation, Ubuntu Exhibition, Go Down Art Gallery, Manjano Exhibition among others. Currently his works are held with private collectors, corporate collections of the Agha Khan University Hospital, Kenyan Originals, Pulse Kenya, The Standard Media Company, Pomona Ltd etc.
