Donovan Harshbarger

For twenty years I taught high school physics and calculus. Now I'm a stay-at-home dad for two adorable little ones, creating abstract art in between Curious George books and raisin requests.

The vast majority of my work is generative art, which means that I write computer programs to create my images. There's an element of randomness in these works, and I love that I can be surprised by the emotions and associations that each piece of my art evokes. Ceding a little bit of the control to a random number generator means that I get to experience my art not just as artist, but also as audience. My favorite artist is Wassily Kandinsky, and I dream of someday developing an algorithm that reflects even some small part of his compositional genius.
