Kate grew up in a time relatively free of technology and materialism. The oldest of four children she lived few houses from the Swan River and was relatively free to roam. Family holidays were at Rottnest, Augusta, Gidgegannup, Shark Bay or long camping expeditions exploring Australia in a Toyota Hyiace. She has always been drawn to create art. Her best friend Jo's mother devised many art activies for the two girls to complete in the huge back yard, complete with a potters shed & a sprawling mulberry tree. Kate played barefoot and rode her cousin's ancient horse 'Tiger' bareback. She says it didn't seem so special then. It is only now as she sees the deluge of complex information and the frentic schedules that todays children must negotiate that she realises what she had.

As a clinical social worker Kate worked in juvenile justice, drugs & alcohol, child protection & health. It is the counselling component of this work that she finds emerging in the art she is creating now. The medium she is working with is encaustic (wax and resin). She colours this with oil crayons, pan pastels and oil paint. She plays with texture and uses the wax to create layers of colour and contrast. The concepts she is working with are an interplay of cognitive behavioural techniques that she used in practice and abstractions that draw on the natural world. These concepts emerge and are developed during the mediative process of producing the work.
