Lupus Foundation of Northern California

With a mission to improve lives impacted by lupus, the Lupus Foundation of Northern California has served the lupus community for more than 40 years. This special Juneteenth design was created in collaboration with lupus patient and Elusive Lupus Support Group leader, Ena Williams, to help celebrate Juneteenth while raising awareness about racial and health disparities in lupus.

What is Lupus?

Systemic lupus erythematosus, referred to as SLE or lupus, is the most common type of lupus and is a complex chronic (long-term) disease that causes systemic inflammation which affects multiple organs. In addition to affecting the skin and joints, it can affect other organs in the body such as the kidneys, the tissue lining the lungs, heart, and brain.

"Lupus is more likely to occur in Black, AAPI, and Hispanic communities. Racial bias can affect access and quality of care for communities of color and lead to poor health outcomes." - source: www.lupus.org/lupus-awareness-month/2021-lupus-awareness-month-week-guide
