I am a blackout poet whose work focuses on the deconstruction of faith and reclamation of sexual autonomy. I primarily work with Sharpies, blacking out Evangelical Christian books about womanhood and marriage. Many of the original texts for my art pieces are books that were in my home when I was growing up, and influenced how my perceptions of my self and my feminity and sexuality were shaped.
Following my exit from Evangelical Christianity in 2017, I began blacking out these books as a way of reclaiming my identity and figuring out who I wanted to be, outside the confines of Christian ideas of womanhood. For me, blackout poetry is a form of therapy, and a healthy way of expressing my anger at being subjected to this toxic theology for so long. Blacking out the harmful ideology in these books and turning them into positive messages of hope feels incredibly subversive after being told how to be a woman for my entire life.
