Ryck Rudd is an artist born and raised in Perth, Western Australia.
Since 2014 Rudd has committed himself to the violent imagery of rampant hormones and temper tantrums. As a painter with an obsession for drawing, the artist has cultured three uniquely stylized series (so far) on the process of male development, citing folklore and myth, child-rearing instruction manuals, infamous familial scandals, and psychoanalysis and modern philosophy.
"Like many sons and daughters, my parents didn’t plan my conception. Both I and my artworks were conceived through reckless sexual impulse. I exaggerate the bodies and apply thick oil paint, to swell and physically intrude into the space of the viewer. These paintings are a means of addressing the dilemma that comes with being accidental in the Millennial generation. "
In 2016 Rudd graduated from Edith Cowan University with a Bachelor of Contemporary Arts, a painting scholarship from Louise Macfie, a nomination into PICA's Hatched 2017, and in the same year won the Joondalup Artist in Focus Award, launching his career with a solo exhibition at the Joondalup Art Gallery. His latest solo showcase (as of June 2018) was in at Emanuel von Bayer in London.
Since graduating from Central TAFE in 2014 with an Advanced Diploma in Contemporary Art, critics have praised Rudd's technical abilities to create uniquely bizarre visuals and unsettling narratives. Despite natural questions against his intentions -- a discourse the artist never discourages -- and some minor censorships, Rudd's output garners growing enthusiasm for its refreshing abandon of straightforward and easily categorized painting.
