Unknown Etiology is a project to help shed light on the experiences of those living with chronic illnesses and the many challenges they face. I have lived more than half of my life with many forms of chronic illness. All have affected my life in various degrees. Most have fallen in the category of what is commonly referred to in medical literature as "Unknown Etiology".

I was inspired to start exploring the concept of what it is to live in a gray area. To have one's life controlled by that which is unknown, and largely invisible to the medical community and many friends, family, and loved ones. My self portraits experiment with the concept of grief, visibility, story, and identity. I believe that there is hope inherent in these images; they portray nearly two decades of fighting to survive, search for answers, and live with authenticity. Illness has taken so much from me, but it has taught me more. I believe more than anything that "spoonies" are the bravest, toughest, magical people I have ever known. We are worthy of so much more from this world.

Myasthenia Gravis is an acquired autoimmune disease that attacks the neuromuscular junction. It is considered a neurological disorder and is a form of Muscular Dystrophy, and its symptoms can be profoundly debilitating and often life threatening due to risk of respiratory failure. I experience severe weakness of the muscles in my eyes, muscles that control my breathing and swallowing, as well as my abdomen, neck, limbs, and hands.
